Review: Hinge Heads

The lovely people at Hinge Heads sent me a few of their decorative finials to review here. They sent three different styles and finishes, including my favorite, the owl!

my sample pack: owl, ballerina and dragon

owl on door hinge with the door open

and with the door closed

I really love these. I love that they have nice strong magnets and stay put when the door opens and closes, and that there is nothing to install or make work on your own (I really don't like assembling things!). These are set to go from the minute you open the package. They are a small but fun touch to any room in any home, and there is a finish and style for whatever look you are going for!

Do you like these too? Stay tuned for a Hinge Heads giveaway next week! Pin It

What's on my nails: MAC Morning After

MAC Morning After is from the Alice & Olivia collection from last fall. The color is a perfect teal, and it applies and wears wonderfully. A perfect color to transition into autumn (I can't believe it's almost September, I just love fall!)

Tomato Pie

How did everyone fare with the storm this weekend? We got some heavy rain and strong winds, but didn't lose power and had no damage in our neighborhood, thankfully. The storm did provide a nice excuse for a lazy day with movie watching, video games, reading and some cooking.

I love all the wonderful summer produce rotating through my local grocery store. On my last visit, the tomatoes were especially tempting, so I decided to make a tomato pie. It's incredibly delicious and tastes a little like lasagne (though there are no noodles). It was perfect served with some grilled chicken.

Ingredients:
Pie Crust (your favorite recipe or a store bought one)
4 Tomatoes, thinly sliced
Salt
3 scallions, sliced
3 t basil, chopped
2/3 cup cheddar, shredded, plus a little extra to top the pie
1/4 cup parmesan, shredded, plus a little extra to top the pie
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 cup mayo
  1. Prick crust all over with a fork and pre-bake for 10 mintes at 450, let cool for awhile before filling (until it is comfortable to touch, or you can even do this step well in advance)
  2. Meanwhile, lay tomato slices on paper towels and sprinkle with salt to drain.
  3. Mix cheeses, garlic and mayo in a bowl until well combined
  4. Create layers in the crust of tomato, scallions and basil, I did about three layers in mine
  5. Spread the cheese mixture evenly over the top, sprinkle top with extra cheese
  6. Bake at 400 until golden brown (about 30 minutes)

Have a safe weekend!

Happy Friday! Not too much is in store for me this weekend. Everyone in the Northeast seems to be abuzz with talk of Hurricane Irene hitting on Sunday, so we're planning to lay low this weekend and try to get things done on Saturday in case Boston does get badly hit, we can just stay in, read, watch movies and bake. I hope we don't lose power! I haven't experienced a hurricane since Bob which was 20 years ago now!

What is everyone up to this weekend? Have you ever experienced a hurricane or are you in Irene's path? What are your favorite things to do when the weather is awful? Pin It

What's on my nails: Zoya Loredana

I discovered Zoya nail polish last year when they were having a promotion for three free bottles and really like the formula.

I still love matte nail polish, I love how quickly it dries and the interesting texture. However I find that it chips really easily, though due to the fast drying power, touch ups are easy! Loredana is a great dark silvery gray.

Hinge Heads

What a fun idea to add a little extra specialness to your home! Hinge Heads are little decorative finials that attach to your door hinges and come in all sorts of cool shapes, styles and finishes (pewter, brass or bronze) so there's one to complement any space. They are magnetized so there aren't any tools involved in installing them either! I love that it's a sort of hidden finishing touch. Also, they currently are having a 20% off sale with the code "goodsie".

Here are a few of my favorites, but I think I love the owl the most, I want to put him on my bedroom door:

Pad Thai

I'm back! Some photos from Maine will be up soon, but in the meantime, I thought I'd start Monday with something yummy to look at.

My love of noodles and Thai food sent me looking for a recipe for Pad Thai that I could make myself, and I found an excellent one! I used this recipe from Big Girls Small Kitchen, the only change I made was adding chicken, and it was a big hit.

Have a peaceful weekend!

Happy Friday! This weekend we are savoring our last moments of vacation. We will be returning from Maine soon, and possibly (hopefully) stopping at some outlets for shopping and our local farm on our way back into Boston to pick some fresh peaches. I love these little pit stops on the way home from a trip, as it makes the vacation seem to last just a little longer!

Summer Vacation

Today we are off for a little vacation to our cottage in Maine! I am so excited to just be away for a few days, and being in a gorgeous spot in the middle of nowhere makes it even better. This house has been in our family since my dad was a kid, and I have been going up there every summer since I was still in my mom's belly. It is truly home for me.

I have a few posts lined up in my absence, and I will post photos from the trip upon my return!

Most of my stuff before getting packed up! My lake vacation essentials: Kindle loaded with new books (Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake, Maine, A Little Bit Wicked), lightweight cotton, favorite jeans, bathing suits, a hoodie, sunscreen, the bare essentials of makeup, my camera and a great bag that goes with everything.

And I found a ladybug in one of my plants while I was getting things ready for the trip! Isn't it cute?

What are your vacation necessities?

Star Wars Pancake Molds

A friend of ours sent us some Star Wars pancake molds from Williams Sonoma, I had seen them so many times in the catalog and was always curious about how well they would work, it turns out they work very well! They made for a fun breakfast and the perfect accompaniment for a Saturday morning viewing of Star Wars.
